We re-insulated the cells and installed a dehumidifier [...] The problem before was that we were only ventilating and not drying.
So we started to put together the dryer project. In any case, it was either the project would go ahead, or I think I would have quit the job.
"Before, we used to fan our hay for two weeks, but since changing the fans and adding extra heat, it's dry in four days."
I opted for barn drying because in my opinion it is the best way to preserve the nutritional quality of the grass all the way to the trough, while being completely self-sufficient in protein.
The dryer was added to the system in 2016 when we switched to organic farming with the aim of having quality fodder, particularly sanitary quality related to our raw milk processing activity.
We wanted to increase our milk production for the processing facility and needed a dry ration to limit health risks. Thanks to the dryer and careful consideration of feed intake, we increased consumption from 28 liters to 32-35 liters, depending on the quality of the forage throughout the year.
